Beauty Picks for Spring ’15

Spring is in the air… or we hope it will be soon anyway. To kick off season and prepare us for all the makeup and skincare needs we’ll have for the hot summer months, brands are rolling out their newest products. Here are a few special ones I can’t wait to get my hands on!

Drunk Elephant Skincare

Summer means sun, and while you should be wearing sunscreen every day, this is the time when it’s really critical that you slap on that SPF. In case you haven’t read my article on sunscreens, go do that. I’ll wait.

Ok. Now that you’re all caught up, you’ll see why I am SOOO excited for this bad boy. Not only is this sunscreen from Drunk Elephant all-natural, cruelty-free, and 100% mineral, but it also has the highest concentration of zinc oxide I’ve ever seen: 20%! This means it’s extra potent and powerful in shielding you from both UVA and UVB rays. This SPF 50 is also packed with plant antioxidants to help protect against sun and environmental damage while repairing existing damage from those years when maybe you weren’t so diligent about wearing sunscreen. Tsk tsk.

While it may be $38 (I know devotees of drugstore sunscreens may have just had an aneurysm), you get 3.3 oz for that money. That’s $11.50 per ounce. Compare that to formulas from Kate Somerville and Algenist, which both come in at $28 per ounce! Yowza. I take my sunscreen super seriously, as I’m definitely on that pale side, and I can’t wait to give this sunscreen a spin!

I was perusing Sephora’s website, as I am oft to do, and I came upon this beauty. Tarte’s newest palette to hit the shelves sine their stu-huh-huh-huninng Tartelette Palette this winter is called… get ready for a tongue twister: Poppy Picnic Limited-Edition Amazonian Clay Eye & Cheek Palette.

I almost shrieked when I saw this (hey, I love makeup. So sue me). It blends my love of warm, coral tones with matte eyeshadows. With everyone going glowy and sparkly for Spring, it’s nice to see Tarte try something different. I love a good matte eye, because then you can put all the emphasis on your luminescent cheeks using Tarte’s absolutely, to-die-for blush color in Glisten (which is also sold as a separate blush in their permanent collection, so don’t panic). I want this so bad, I’m regretting that my birthday was all the way back in the fall. Le sigh.

On the bright side, it’s only $38, which isn’t terrible for such a cute eye palette. Might be a time for #TreatYoSelf.

Sephora Collection

One of my biggest problems traveling is not the amount of makeup I carry, it’s my brushes. They’re all different shapes and sizes. Even when I’m able to cram all my makeup into a cute little makeup bag, my brushes never fit. I’ve tried smaller kits, but they never have all the brushes I know I’ll need. So I end up having to bring a whole second bad for my brushes, which inevitably get crushed, might I add. So when I saw this new brush collection from Sephora, I was like WHAAATTTT?!??!?!

It comes with literally every brush you could ever want to travel with, including ones for contouring, highlighting, eyeshadow, eyebrows, eyeliner. You name it, it’s got it! Each brush it double ended, making the kit a huge space-saver. It also comes in a lovely rose-gold color and perfectly-sized, travel case. No more squished brushes! It’s $68 for the whole set, which is not cheap, but this is also literally the perfect kit. Besides, $68 for 12 brushes. That’s less than $6 a brush, not to mention you get the case. Not bad really.

Bite Beauty

Watercolor Lip Gloss Library

Now, I’m really not a huge fan of lipgloss. The sticky mess is just too much for me, but I might need to get over it when this cornucopia of glosses from Bite Beauty hits the shelves. Looks like my Studio Arts degree is wildly attracted to this aptly named Watercolor Lip Gloss Library that’s available to VIB Rouge members on April 7 and to the public shortly after. It comes with 12 sheer glosses in gorgeous, pastel colors ranging from yellow and green to purple and pink. As it’s not available yet, I haven’t personally tried them, but I know Bite wouldn’t steer me wrong. I hear the crazy colors are actually super wearable. Looks like I’ll have to just roll the dice and give these babies a try. You know, for science.

Too Faced

Melted Metal Liquified Metallic Lipstick

I remember when I was working in Sephora and Too Faced’s Melted Liquified Log Wear Lipsticks came out. All of my coworkers were raving about them. Apparently it was inspired when someone in the Too Faced family accidentally left a lipstick in their hot car and noticed how gorgeous it become when it melted! They decided to harness a permanent melted effect that lasts on lips and doesn’t bleed. They started with only four shades, and now their collection is up to 18. This doesn’t even include the newest release of 8, count ‘em 8, colors with a metallic finish. This super-long-wear formula will last you hours, so you won’t have to reapply. That’ll make this $21 tube last you quite a while.

So there are your Spring picks, ladies and gents. Even if it’s not exactly warm outside yet, out makeup bags can be prepared, right?

  1. I wish there was a Sephora store where I’m at… I want to check out Sephora’s Double Ended Brush collection! So good for travelling and it looks so pretty, and not even too expensive! 🙂

    1. If you’re not VIB Rouge and automatically get free shipping, you can now pay $10 a month for Sephora Flash, where you get unlimited free shipping for the whole year! … I may have just created a monster by telling you that 😉
